Blu-Ray Living in the Material World

Now available for US and Canadian pre-order – release date May 1, 2012

Living in the Material World

Three versions of documentary will release on October 10, 2011 but only in UK and EU, pity!

Beatles and George Harrison fans will able to get three versions of Martin Scorsese’s documentary: DVD, Blu-Ray and Deluxe Edition Blu-Ray. Unless your player is all-regions you’re out of luck.

For North American fans, that source is not going to work since both the DVD and Blu-Ray formats are restricted to the UK, Europe, the ,Middle East and South Africa. The Blu-Ray disk will also play in Greenland, French territories, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Deluxe Edition Blu-Ray

At £73.47, the Deluxe Edition looks interesting for collectors and died-in-the-wool fans – and who isn’t.

The Deluxe Edition contains “2 DVDs, a Blu-ray, a CD of never-before-heard tracks (available exclusively in this edition) and a 96-page book to accompany the film–all beautifully packaged within a collectable picture-frame box.” (Amazon.co.uk)

Special Features:

George plays the Uke*

Jeff Lynne interview
Damon Hill interview
Growing Up in Liverpool interview*

* Exclusive to the Deluxe Edition.

Exclusive CD Tracklist:

6. Woman Don’t You Cry For Me (early take) 2:44
7. Awaiting On You All (early take) 2:40

Amazon.com

North American fans don’t even have a release date, although I suspect it will be late October or November, after the last HBO broadcast.

As of today, Amazon.com only has a “notify me” page for the Blu-Ray version. No word on the DVD or Deluxe Blu-Ray, which would make a great suggestion for Christmas. (Hint)

If you are interested, it doesn’t cost anything to let Amazon.com notify you.

Multi-Region Players

Regional releases of media is one of those things the industry uses to control distribution. It drives consumers to either pirate copies or to replace their players with multi-region players.

Such players may become illegal in Canada with the new Conservative Copyright Law that prohibits breaking the digital locks. Law cracks down on digital piracy in Canada

I’ll admit to no experience with multi-region players. The LG BD640 Network Wireless Blu-ray Disc Player is not listed as region free at Amazon.com. At 220-Electonics the same model is said to be region free.

The region free model is said to convert PAL to NTSC and vice versa. I suspect the vendor has modified the stock player. They claim future updates to the BIOS, always an issue with Blu-Ray, will not affect the region free modification.
