Bon Iver – Re: Stacks

Some weary, peaceful music for Friday from US Indie band

Bon Iver is an indie folk band based on the songs and singing of Justin Vernon. The name comes from bon hiver, “good winter”. The sound proves once again there is no substitute for a great, high male voice.

Vernon is joined by “Sean Carey (drums, vocals, piano), Michael Noyce (vocals, baritone guitar, guitar) and Matthew McCaughan (bass, drums, vocals).” (Wiki)

The big inspiration for Justin was a bout of mono that kept him inside a cabin in Wisconsin during the winter of 2007. From his incarceration came For Emma, Forever Ago,

The first CD was recorded with the barest of essentials, a Shure SM57 mic and an old guitar amp. Recording by himself required numerous overdubs. The CD was intended as a demo but people like it just the way it was. An example to all budding musicians that great music doesn’t come from hardware but from people.

Re: Stacks was used in the TV show House, MD

To compensate for the harmony parts of For Emma, Forever Ago when performed in public, they hand out the lyrics and get the audience to sing along. “I don’t want to be the guy with an acoustic guitar singing songs, because that’s boring for the most part,” Vernon told Pitchfork. “The song actually needs 80–500 people singing or whatever the vibe is of that room, it needs that fight.”

Lyrics
This my excavation and today is kumran
Everything that happens is from now on
This is pouring rain
This is paralyzed

I keep throwing it down two-hundred at a time
It’s hard to find it when you knew it
When your money’s gone
And you’re drunk as hell

On your back with your racks as the stacks as your load
In the back and the racks and the stacks are your load
In the back with your racks and you’re un-stacking your load

I’ve twisting to the sun I needed to replace
The fountain in the front yard is rusted out
All my love was down
In a frozen ground

There’s a black crow sitting across from me; his wiry legs are crossed
And he’s dangling my keys he even fakes a toss
Whatever could it be
That has brought me to this loss?

On your back with your racks as the stacks as your load
In the back and the racks and the stacks of your load
In the back with your racks and you’re un-stacking your load

This is not the sound of a new man or crispy realization
It’s the sound of the unlocking and the lift away
Your love will be
Safe with me
