When is a blog an advertisement

When all they do it pitch their services

We follow the computer virus topic on Google Reader. Last week we started getting “stories” that are just advertisements on a variety of cookie cutter sites. The latest one is Fix-Laptop Problems.

The main article is a wistful story about “Late last night when we sitting out on the verandah, my little two year old remarked looking heavenward on how beautiful the clouds were looking and both my husband and I followed his gaze and realized that it was indeed a beautiful sight.”

I got all soft and fuzzy until it struck me these are the same folks who brought us the scam email virus checker CyberDefender. Virus and spyware scams getting more sophisticated

At least this week they have an ad from McAfee although the site is really pushing their “$139 Unlimited Annual Plan”. Who could resist such a great offer from a love-your-puppy company. According the reports, most of these scam sites just want to milk the bank accounts of seniors, game players and other gullible users.

The same scheme is run on several sites with the “Fix” prefix, as in “Fix Email Problems” and “Fix Computer Problems”. That’s another scam trick. Use a popular search term in your domain name. Caveat emptor.

We were thinking of setting up a site “Fix your NJN” except nobody knows what an NJN is. Some of the suggestions were down right pornographic so we didn’t follow up on the idea.
