News 6 Insider appears to be a real news website with a story about companies hiring people to work from home. It actually is an advertisement for a program called “Wealth Connection”. It may be a phishing scam.

Employment is important. With a recession, lots of people are looking for work so stories that promote employment get read.

This one just doesn’t ring true.

None of the logos or reputable companies like AOL, CNN or MSNBC work. You can’t click them or the other references on the page.

Clicking on “Sports” or almost anywhere sends you to a second screen that asks for name, address and email information. The screen after that wanted a credit card for a small administration fee of$1.95 for a trial 3 day offer.

The small print at the bottom says it costs another $88.65 a month to continue the service which is billed automatically until you cancel.

If you cancel within 30 days, Wealth Connection has $88.65 for what we can’t tell. It may be the promise of a job. It may be a link to online jobs that are open.  It may be a web-site builder to build your own real-looking newspaper site that convinces people to send you $88.65 a month.

This is apparently a scam but it’s hard to find out. A Google search of the term “Wealth Connection scam” returns 1.7 million hits. The first two pages were all phony web sites that had been set up to answer the question “Is Wealth Connection” a scam. They all said it was real and a good place to make money

Biz Ops review, which is not a legitimate site, writes a phony review of Wealth Connection and links to their site.

My virus checker warned me the sites were attempting to access my computer and advised terminating the connection.

Just staying on the pages long enough to research this story probably compromised my computer. I will have to do a deep scan to check.
