Opposition leaders on trial with 100 others

NJN Network, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, August 1, 2009 with story from aljazeera.net

The trials began on August 1st, 2009 of former opposition leaders in Tehran “to face allegations that they attacked security forces and destroyed property, among other charges.”

It’s significant to note that many of those on trial are heroes of the 1979 Revolution that overthrew the Shah. Questioning their loyalty and patriotism shows the depth of the schism between the Ahmadinejad and Khamenei government and those who hold these two men are traitors themselves to the Revolution. Political and street battles continue in Iran

“The Fars news agency reported that a number of those appearing on Saturday were reformists who served in the government of Mohammed Khatami, a former president.”

The report says that those charged with essentially sedition could face the death penalty.

Despite the trials, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi twp defeated candidates are calling on the government to free thousands of detainees.
