“As a woman with autism and 2 autistic kids, I had that one figured out quite some time ago” says Janet Norman-Bain the mother of Alex Bain who ran PEI Maration last year. “Do we really think a genetic test won’t lead to a 90% abortion rate as there is for DS?” she added.

Another point of view is presented by Larry Arnold in his Nature Genetics Blog.

There is a wide diversity of opinion about Autism, its cause and potential treatment. On PEI, the Government is less confused: it doesn’t provide the same level of support as 9 other Provinces.

It’s funny how everyone jumps to the eugenics / abortion issue.
When I was pregnant with one of mine, they told me that he had x% chance of being deaf – I book my spot in the library and started a crash course. Now if they had told me that he had an y% chance of being autistic, I’d have been in a completely different aisle of the library.
    Cheers dears
