RESPONSE TO PEI DISABILITY ALERT

Question posed: What will you do to include all Islanders with disabilities under Disability Support Program coverage, should your political party form the next government of the Province of Prince Edward Island?

The Island New Democrats have always endorsed changes to the Disability Support Program. We have worked to bring this issue to light and pose the questions to the elected officials. Our 2007 Election Platform addresses these changes as we will put in place an enhanced Disabilities Support Program, with an independent appeals process and coverage for Island Seniors under the Disability Support Program.

The fact that of 19,000 Islanders with a disability only 1,000 receive support, and that the current government seems ok with this is completely unacceptable.

We also want to assure you that even if we do not form government, this will continue to be a key issue for the Island New Democrats after the election as it was prior to the election campaign. Island New Democrats are your voice for a better future.
