One of Dylan’s most poignant songs about life, love lost and despair in a recent live performance
Bob Dylan, Not Dark Yet
“Not Dark Yet” is one of the finest Bob Dylan songs from his late period masterpiece ”Time Out of Mind”.
A fan posted this rare concert video. The world-weariness Dylan wrote about in the atmospheric Daniel Lanois 1997 production seems even more poignant with Dylan’s current singing voice.
Lanois and his long-time engineer Mark Howard avoid the industry standard DAW Pro Tools

Daniel Lanois has won three Grammy Awards as producer for album of the year. He also likes to avoid Pro Tools and other software based audio recording software.
“I don’t like the sound of Pro Tools, and I also don’t think it’s a reliable platform: it crashes too often,” Lanois’ engineer Mark Howard told Sound on Sound (Feb 2011).
That statement is heresy in the world of music recording where Pro Tools is the creme de la creme of digital audio workstation software.
Lanois has been known for unconventional thinking in music production. His last two albums were Neil Young’s LeNoise and Black Dub.
Neil Young won the 2011 Grammy for Best Rock Song for Angry World off Le Noise. Lanois must be doing something right. Continue reading →
You can stream the whole CD or just a few songs on NPR. (I have no idea how long that will last. The stream for Bob Dylan’s last release went dead within a week.)
Based on a first listen, the CD sounds more polished and balanced than the studio cuts Lanois released in the spring. It’s all in the mixing and mastering which is where Lanois shines – the finished product. Continue reading →
Recovered from his motorcycle accident Lanois puts on video and live show in Nathan Phillips Square

Daniel Lanois was true to his promise. Despite his motorcycle accident in June, he was recovered enough to perform both a video show and live at Toronto’s Nuit Blanche. Nuit Blanche is also held in Montreal, Paris, Brussels and London.
Updated with more coverage at the end.
Nuit Blanche is an sunrise to sunset celebration of contemporary art. This year marks Toronto’s fifth Nuit Blanche. Patrons wandered around 130 exhibits during the night in a variety of destinations.
There was rain in the early evening and the temperature dipped from 11 C. to 7 C. so you’ll notice coats, and overcoats even, on everyone except the exotic dancer. Lanois dressed in a long overcoat performed life for the crowd.
Lanois has proven that he can spring back from his accident. We’d love to see a video with singing. Trixie Whitley performed with Lanois although we haven’t got a video yet.

Creative duo morphs from jazz to pop music in front of our eyes making music videos interesting again
Pomplamoose Single Ladies
Bob Lefsetz introduced me to Pomplamoose two days ago and I can’t get enough of them. Thankfully, they have dozens of videos posted on YouTube.
Pomplamoose are Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn from San Francisco. They started performing in 2008 and have a decent following on the internet. Their cover of Lady GaGa Telephone has more than 5 million hits.
Using what looks like a home recording setup they are creating some very interesting music, both originals and covers.
Their videos seem so effortless – and they show you almost everything – it makes you want to jump in and create your own music videos. Continue reading →
