Martell Builders Green Homes in Moncton, sell like hotcakes

CBC is reporting that new home construction is down 9% for the Cornwall, Charlottetown and Stratford region.

Summerside however is booming with 32% increase in new home construction.

The problem lies squarely on the shoulders of the municipal governments and greedy developers who are not in sync with the market.  Summerside is experiencing growth because they are addressing the growth segment of the market.  Continue reading

Charlottetown Civic Centre, only one wheelchair accessible exit off the floor on Sunday night

At the Stompin Tom Connors concert on Sunday in May 2009, the Charlottetown Civic Centre had only one wheelchair accessible exit off the floor. It was the exit closest to the Box Office.

There were more than 30 people were on the arena floor in wheelchairs.  In an emergency, many of those people in wheelchairs were at risk.

A May 2009 press release from PEI Fire Marshal David Blacquiere will be cold comfort to relatives of those who would have perished if a fire broke out.

Intruder attempts break and entry in Charlottetown bedroom

3 AM attempt to enter bedroom of sleeping teenager foiled by older sister

An unknown perpetrator attempted to enter a Charlottetown residence at 3 AM last night. The person, thought to be a young male or female, removed an outside screen on a basement window and jimmied the window open. The window was above the bed of a sleeping teenage female.

The perpetrator was attempting to enter and knocked over a Christmas candle decoration while moving the blinds aside. The person had pulled the cord to pull the blinds up facilitating their entrance.

The only light on in the room was a night light near the sleeping girl. Her older sister was in the far corner of the room browsing the internet. She turned around quickly and saw the hand and arm of a small male or female entering the room.

Kafkaesque captcha at PEI Newcomers Association

PEI Newcomers email captcha - gotcha - click for larger image

First off, let’s admit it’s a wonderful sunny day on PEI. Yesterday was so warm at 3 PM, I had to dig out last summer’s shorts and put them on. Today is a little colder but so nice out of the wind. Spring or summer is here.

I was downtown wheeling around in my wheelchair on errands. Surprisingly two offices I visited – IRAC and PEI Newcomers – don’t have automatic doors.

They should have their entrance doors with a button to make them accessible for the disabled. I wrote Moe Rogerson (IRAC) and Kevin Arsenault (PEI Newcomers) and asked them about it.

PEI Newcomers don’t trust the Internet. They have a web form to send them messages.

However, the web form has a captcha invented in a Frank Kafka nightmare. It is only three letters long. No matter what you enter it comes back “Validation string is not correct.”

Click on the image to see what happens. I tried it 5 or 6 times and got bored.

Maybe they get tired of whining Chinese immigrants who want help or their deposits back. Just put a little eternal loop in the email form and ipso presto – no annoying immigrant emails.

I asked Kevin about that too.

Update – November 27th, 2009 – Kevin told me to take him off my email contacts after I asked about the accessible door and now he is retiring to move on to greener pastures.
