While opposition politicians Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi call for new elections, protests and violence continues in Terhan although at a lower level. This video from June 30th shows Basij on the rooftop of a three story building firing into the people below. Protesters are coming down two streets that meet.

In another video from June 27th, 2009, a woman who has been shot is taken away in an ambulance. Both videos are cell phone captures and were posted on LiveLeak by agharazi. The videos are posted by an Iranian national living in Europe with former ties to the Iranian Air Force.

It would appear the protests while continuing have less and less force and the government clampdown has succeeded in the short run. However, the protest and desire for a more democratic Iran is not going away.

Iran leader cancels Africa visit

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has cancelled his trip to an African Union summit in Libya, officials in Tehran say.

Mr Ahmadinejad’s office did not give any reason for the decision.

His visit would have been one of his first major public appearances abroad since his re-election in Iran’s disputed poll last month.

The opposition has staged mass protests, saying the poll was rigged. The authorities deny the claim.

Some 17 people are thought to have died during opposition street rallies.

On Monday, Iran’s top electoral body, the Guardian Council, confirmed Mr Ahmadinejad’s victory after a partial recount.

His main challenger, Mir Hossein Mousavi, has said the whole election should be annulled and held again.

On Wednesday, another defeated candidate, Mehdi Karoubi, said Mr Ahmadinejad’s government was illegitimate. BBC News
