Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued Blu-ray coming May 25th 2015

By Stephen Pate – When Sony Columbia Records was releasing The Basement Tapes Raw: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 last fall, another version of Bob Dylan’s lost songs was on the go.

Roots producer T. Bone Burnett, of Oh Brother Where Art Thou fame, released an album of 20 songs Bob Dylan forgot to finish from The Basement Tapes called Lost On The River.

It was a cool project where Burnett had the lyrics from Dylan’s 47-year-old notebooks that he had not put to music. It was like The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams where Bob Dylan and other artists put unfinished Hank Williams songs to music. That turned out to be one of my favorite CD’s of 2011.

Fans loved the new/old Bob Dylan songs done by modern artists for Lost on the River like Marcus Mumford, Elvis Costello, Jim James, Rhiannon Giddens, and Taylor Goldsmith. It’s like new artists meet the old, songs that bridge the almost 50 year gap. Of course, Dylan’s words are always the key to his songs.

As one critic wrote about Dylan, he brought poetry to rock music and was one of the few who actually read Verlaine and Rimbaud before he did it. It’s Dylan’s words that get inside our heads and become the soundtracks of our lives, like the classic Hank Williams songs.

Eagle Rock is releasing Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continuedfor Blu-ray and DVD on May 26. You can pre-order it now, which I already did.

Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued is a film by director Sam Jones about the making of the album ‘Lost On The River’, or at least 16 of 20 songs. The Deluxe edition CD has 4 songs not included on the Blu-ray or first CD.

“The project focuses on sixteen sets of lyrics that were written by Bob Dylan during the legendary ‘The Basement Tapes’ sessions in 1967 but only recently rediscovered.

Produced by T Bone Burnett with Bob Dylan’s approval an extraordinary collective of musicians was brought together to set the lyrics to music: Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James and Marcus Mumford. The film presents an exclusive and intimate look at the making of the ‘Lost On The River’ album set against the important and historical cultural backdrop of Bob Dylan and The Band s original ‘The Basement Tapes’.”

The film was directed by filmmaker Sam Jones who did the Wilco documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart – A Film About Wilco.
