With a release an album schedule that would challenge The Beatles in their prime, Bob Dylan has another CD coming
By Stephen Pate – In an open tribute to Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan is releasing an album of Sinatra cover songs Shadows In The Night on February 3, 2015. Jazz fans will note the similarity of the album art to the Blue Note label.
Bob Dylan has always liked covering other artists. His first album was almost all cover songs. He often sang standards and his favourites during The Never Ending Tour. Here’s “Lucky Old Sun” from 2000.
Bob Dylan wrote his own story for this release – “It was a real privilege to make this album. I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time but was never brave enough to approach 30-piece complicated arrangements and refine them down for a 5-piece band. That’s the key to all these performances.”
“We knew these songs extremely well. It was all done live. Maybe one or two takes. No overdubbing. No vocal booths. No headphones. No separate tracking, and, for the most part, mixed as it was recorded.”
“I don’t see myself as covering these songs in any way. They’ve been covered enough. Buried, as a matter a fact. What me and my band are basically doing is uncovering them. Lifting them out of the grave and bringing them into the light of day.”
Interestingly with “We knew these songs extremely well” Dylan is paraphrasing his own words in “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” – “But I’ll know my song well before I start singing”
The “Full Moon and Empty Arms” audio was released in May.
Bob Dylan is not Frank Sinatra, who was one of the greatest singers of the last century.
Sinatra had a way of phrasing songs that could make your hair stand on end. Sinatra also had phenomenal breath control. He could sing phrases that defy most singers.
Bob Dylan will put his own inimitable stamp on these Sinatra songs. During the last concerts of The Never Ending Tour this year, Dylan sang “Stay With Me” during the encore. Here is “Stay With Me” from The Beacon Theatre in NYC, November 29, 2014.
