Vinyl fans will have to wait until November 24 for the 3 LP version of The Basement Tapes Raw
By Stephen Pate – We have waited 47 years for the release of the Basement Tapes with Bob Dylan and The Band. The wait will be 20 days longer than the CD version according to Amazon.com.
The Basement Tapes Raw: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 (Vinyl) at $69.99 will ship November 24, 2014.
The Basement Tapes were recorded on a two-track stereo tape recorder in basements in Saugerties, New York with Bob Dylan and The Band (then The Hawks.) Meant as demo tapes for the music publisher, copies got bootlegged and became some of the most coveted Dylan recordings.
I got my iTunes version of The Basement Tapes complete 30 minutes after midnight on November 4th. The album has been in constant rotation on my iPad ever since.
Despite having unofficial bootlegs of the Basement Tapes for years, this release is full of joyful new discoveries.
I have a rule not to write critical reviews of Dylan for at least a year or two. Like good wine, Dylan is best savoured slowly. I never thought the 2013 Another Self Portrait (1969-1971): The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 would be more than an artifact but I love listening to it over and over.
While the Dylan CD boxsets are still for sale years later, the vinyl Bootlegs of Bob Dylan generally get one pressing and are then sold out.
Some of the vinyl Bob Dylan bootleg’s I’ve collected over the decades are worth double what I paid.
To vinyl fans, the vinyl discs sound better and the accompanying booklets are larger, collectible and fun to read, as in big enough not to strain your aging eyes.
Of course, I’m not selling yet. I’ll leave that to my estate.
What’s in the 3-LP set?
- Special deluxe LP-set on 180-gram vinyl
- Featuring 3 LP’s of 38 highlights from Dylan’s legendary 1967 sessions with The Band
- Compiled from meticulously restored original tapes
- Includes exclusive 12×12” booklet with extensive liner notes and rare photographs
- Also includes all the tracks on 2 CD’s
The New Yorker just reviewed The Basement Tapes in the article After the Fall. It is a decent long-style article if you skip the “first time I heard Bob Dylan” part, which has none of the interest of say “the first time I kissed Lucy Partridge”.
Tracks on the LP’s
The same 19 songs are included on the 2-CD’s in the vinyl box set (normally $19.99). Therefore, The Basement Tapes Raw: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 (Vinyl) really only costs $50.00.
You will need the CD’s to rip the mp3’s to activate the Apple Bob Dylan Bootleg app which releases Nov 4, 2014 along with the music.
Ordering in Canada
Canadians can’t save money by ordering The Basement Tapes Raw: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 (Vinyl) from Amazon.ca for a total of $107.73 HST and shipping (free) included.
From Amazon.com, the landed price is only $103.25 for The Basement Tapes Raw Vinyl . It’s close but no cigar.
Take heart – Sony wants $131.98 to land the vinyl set in Canada. Ouch.
If you order from Canada tell me in a comment how long it took to get your discs SVP.
Personally, I ordered the iTunes version for the complete set and The Basement Tapes Raw: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 (Vinyl). I always want the vinyl no matter what my head says.
