iTunes sells the 139-song Basement Tapes Complete: Bootleg Series Vol. 11 Complete for $50
By Stephen Pate – I’m cheap and like to pay the least for everything. I scrounged around for a month to find Another Self Portrait (1969-1971): The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 Deluxe for $9.99 from Nokia Music versus $30 and up everywhere else. (Update – deal is over)
Patience has paid off again because iTunes is selling the The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11, all 139 songs for $49.99. Amazon.com has the same set for $127.88 plus shipping, taxes and exchange if you live in Canada.
The iTunes version includes all the songs in The Basement Tapes including different takes and covers and has the best price. I ordered it already.
Last time I told everyone about the Nokia deal, the price went up two days later so act now or maybe repent later.
With a pre-order you get 5 songs now and the rest of the songs immediately on November 4, 2014:
- Odds and Ends
- You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere
- One Too Many Mornings
- Ain’t No More Cane
- Dress It Up, Better Have It All
What you don’t get from iTunes is 6 CD’s and the “Exclusive 120 page deluxe-bound book containing rare and unseen photographs and memorabilia with extensive liner notes.”
Who cares? The book will be CD sized and too small to read.
If you have an iPhone or iPad the same information and more is included in the free Bob Dylan Bootleg App – Bob Dylan Bootleg App Covers The Basement Tapes.
With iTunes you also get replacements if you lose the mp3 files, which has saved my bacon a few times. Although I have almost all Dylan vinyl albums and most CD’s 3 times, I listen to Dylan on my computer and iPad now. It’s just more convenient.
If MP3’s or iTunes don’t appeal to you, the 6-CD box set at $128 is available from Amazon.com at this link The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11(Deluxe Edition).
You can also just order the 2-CD 20 song album for $19.88 The Basement Tapes Raw: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11.
The iTunes $49.99 copy in available at the link The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11
See What’s In The Three Versions of Bob Dylan’s The Basement Tapes for the exact contents of each set.
The Basement Tapes is an important historical recording for Bob Dylan. It represents Dylan’s transition from drug-fueled rock imagery in Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde to his new sparse country based music on John Wesley Harding. In 1967 with The Band outside of Woodstock New York, Dylan explored the roots of American music and pointed the way for a new style of music that would follow. In case you’re doing the math, the landed price in Canada for the Deluxe set is about $170. In the US, the saving is $78.
Peter
Stephen , iTunes price is $59.99. Are you sure it was $50? Is Apple playing games?
Thanks for the heads up .

When I ordered it yesterday the price was $49.99. I can’t see the price anymore because it says “pre-ordered”. I assumed they would put the price up. Check the preview of “You Ain’t Goin Nowhere” for a screen shot of $49.99.
