There is an Amazon.com deal today for this kit MakerBot Total Desktop Package $799 off deal that saves $796. The deal starts at 8AM EST.

It’s hard to believe you can do this on your own, at home or in your business. OK, the price at $2,800 is advanced hobbyist/enthusiast but it is within the realm of possibility

People are buying these kits and setting up a service bureau to provide 3D modelling and kits as a service.

A decade ago, a friend tried to explain how the Canadian government was working on a project to 3D print parts for the military in the field. I thought he was crazy but he assured me it works. At the time the project was top-secret and he gave me one of those warnings. “I could tell you more but I would have to kill you afterward.”

The technology has come a long way.

There are also kits around the $1,200 mark with the FlashForge 3D printer from China that lack the integration support and service of MakerBot.
