One year after Windows 8, a major update arrives to cement Microsoft’s position as the leading operating system developer and fix user concerns
Windows 8.1 will improve the Start screen, return the missed Start button, add Internet Explorer 11, integrate a richer Bing Search into the operating system and apps, add multi-tasking and embed SkyDrive for the cloud everywhere.
The update is free at the Microsoft Store or by checking Windows Update. I would back up first since there is a major change to SkyDrive in 8.1. The default setting keeps your files only on the cloud.
Of course the usual critics will rise to the occasion with some nasty stuff but don’t let them stop you. Get Windows 8.1 and take your computer experience to a new high level.
Crusty old Consumers Reports has praise and faint criticism
“Windows 8.1 looks like an upgrade worth making, and it’s free. It’s not a radical change from Windows 8, but the new features, concessions to user complaints, and Microsoft’s usual method of providing multiple ways to do the same thing add plenty to the table. The downside is that if you’re finally getting used to all the new ways of using Windows 8, this version switches things up enough that you’ll face a bit more of a learning curve.”

Windows 8.1 free upgrade
Windows 8.1 is a free update for Windows 8 users, available on the Windows Store starting October 18, 2013. Users of Windows 7 and earlier versions can buy Microsoft Windows 8.1 – Full Version for $120, available on pre-order from Amazon.com.
Here’s a tip. If you don’t already have Windows 8.0, you can save some money by finding a discounted copy of Windows 8.0 upgrade and get the update free. Amazon.com still has Microsoft Windows 8 Pro – Upgrade
