Nokia Smartphones Get Super-Sized

Will Microsoft/Nokia 6″ Nokia 1520 and 1320 phones beat Android to the $46 billion market for large smartphones?

The new 6 inch Nokia Lumia phablets have 6″ screens making them the largest smartphones or the smallest tablets on the market.

The 1520 also has one of the best smartphone cameras and camera apps.

This may become the new ideal size. Large enough to use Microsoft Office and a better browser for the internet. I would certainly sell my 7″ Nexus if I had a 6″ phone.

Both the Lumia 1520 and the economy priced Lumia 1320 run a new version of Windows Phone 8 that allows three columns of tiles on the home screen. That means more information at your finger tips but more to hold in your hand.

The Windows Phone 8 Update 3, or as it’s affectionately known Update GDR3, will roll-out to all Windows Phone 8 users shortly but it comes installed on the new Lumia 1520 and 1320.

Phablet, phone or tablet

Phablet are smartphones 5 inches to 6 inches in size,  a cross between a phone and tablet. Phablets always work as phones, tablets rarely have 4G service and rely mainly on Wi-Fi communications.

Forbes magazine reports phablets are a $46 billion market in which Apple iPhones don’t even have a foothold in this market with a product. Both Samsung and LG have phablets.

Is 6″ too big? Everyone said the Nokia Lumia 920 was too big with a 4.7” screen but i got used to it right away. The 920 and 1020 fit in your shirt, jacket or pants pocket, although you should try them first if you have small hands. The 5″ phone almost replaces using a 7″ or larger tablet for checking mail, browsing websites

My wife prefers her smaller Blackberry for instance, although I’ve seen her text our daughter on the Lumia.

A 6” smartphone is only one inch smaller than a Nexus 7 tablet, which does not fit in your pocket.

I can’t believe Apple just released 2 more 4” phones at premium prices.

Appleaholics like Apple even when 85% of the market for smartphones has moved on to larger phones from Samsung, HTC, LG and Nokia.

Nokia Lumia 1520

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is more than the world’s largest smartphone with a 6” HD screen. It’s also probably the best smartphone camera, with PureView 20MP and the new Nokia Camera and Storeyteller apps.

Nokia Camera now includes the same about of professional camera controls as the 41 MP Lumia 1020. With on-screen touch controls you can change the aperture, speed, focus, white balance and everything to need to get your shots just right. All the automatic features on other phones make it impossible to capture a sunset with the same color saturation we see with our eyes. The Lumia 1520 and Nokia Camera allow you to make the shot the way you like.

Storeyteller allows you to create storyboards with photos tied to geographic locations. Nokia is distinguishing itself with a focus on photography.

AT&T Nokia Lumia 1520 missing features

The AT&T version of the Lumia 1520 is limited to 16GB of memory storage. Other carriers are selling the 32GB version as well.

AT&T also omits Lumia wireless charging, a feature that I use and like. After using wireless charging, it seems cumbersome to have to plug a cable in to the Apple iPad Air, Kindle Fire HD, Nexus 7 and other tablets.
