Nokia may be selling its phone business to Microsoft but that isn’t stopping them introducing a 10.1 Windows 8.1 tablet
The Nokia Lumia 250 is a 10.1″ Windows 8.1 tablet that will compete rather handily with Microsoft’s own Surface 2. Though more or less the same, the Lumia 2520 is 4G compatible at about the same price but has a better camera and more software apps.
“It’s a complete package,” product manager Paul Bischof told the Nokia Conversations website. It takes everything you’ve got in your desktop or laptop and crams all that into a device that’s only 8.9mm thick and weights a little over a pound.”
Along with all the normal Windows 8.1 apps and Microsoft Office RT, Nokia offer a complete suite of apps on the Windows Phone that are getting ported to the Lumia 2520 tablet. In fact, Nokia are targeting the tablet at people who already have a Lumia Phone.
Personally, I use a Lumia 920 and would rather have a tablet that duplicates the 920 functionality.
Little things are better on the 920 like random songs on Nokia Music while Xbox music does not have the feature yet. Sometimes I can buy songs cheaper on the Nokia Store.
The Nokia camera, maps and Here apps are outstanding apps that don’t need any qualifiers.
Here City Lens is an awesome app that overlays destination information live over where you point the Lumia phone. You have to try it understand how powerful and helpful City Lens is.
I was trying it downtown on Sunday during brunch. It was missing a restaurant and it allowed me to add it.
The Lumia 2520 has a 10.1-inch HD display that uses the Nokia ClearBlack Display filter cuts down on glare for use outside. A 6.7 megapixel camera is included with the Lumia 2520 with ZEISS optics, which allows users to take pictures in any light including low light.
The Lumia 2520 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. The 8000mAh battery in the Lumia 2520 will offer a fast charging with the battery going from zero to 80 percent after one hour of charging time.
The Lumia 2520 also comes with 2GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage with the opportunity to add up 32 GB more with a card slot on the tablet.
Unlike Microsoft’s new Surface 2, Nokia’s Lumia 2520 comes with 4G LTE support — my wife will love this since she still has 3G on her iPad.
Users also get SkyDrive cloud storage on the Microsoft network. It comes in the same bright colors and the Lumia phone: red, white, cyan and black, although only red will be available on release.
The tablet will come with the same Nokia Camera app that ships with the 41MP 1020 camera, I mean smartphone.
The Nokia Storyteller is an app that keeps an account of when and where pictures are taken. Using the HERE map app, users can zoom in and see exactly where the photo was taken in the world.
For accessories, Nokia introduced the Nokia Power Keyboard. The case provides protection to the tablet in addition to being a keyboard. The keyboard contains a battery that adds up to five hours to the life of the tablet and features two USB ports.
The Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet will retail for $499 and be available for the pre-Christmas market this year.
