Mumford and Sons win Grammys for the CD Babel and the movie Big Easy Express
Mumford and Sons won the 2012 Grammy Award for Album of the Year for “Babel” and Best Long Form Music Video for “Big Easy Express” with Old Crow Medicine Show and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
Mumford and Sons were also top performers on the 55th Grammy Awards show blowing the doors off the Staples Center with a rousing “I Will Wait” from “Babel”. They were so hot that Taylor Swift was singing along in the audience.
It has only been two years since Mumford and Sons exploded on the North American music scene with their Grammy performance along side Bob Dylan and the Avett Brothers. Mumford and Sons win on Grammys
Mumford and Sons “Babel”
Mumford and Sons won the 2012 Grammy for Best CD for their hot 2nd studio album “Babel“, which is now #1 Best Seller in American Alternative Rock on Amazon.com.
The album was released in October 2012 and became #1 on the UK Albums Chart and Billboard 200. During its debut, Babel sold 600,000 copies second only to Taylor Swift’s “Red”. Babel has sold more than 2 million copies to date.
Critical response to “Babel” has been somewhat muted compared to their first studio album “Sigh No More” but fans of the indie folk group love the CD. Mumford and Sons are currently touring North America to sold out crowds.
Mumford and Sons in Big Easy Express
Mumford and Sons won again last night as the stars of Emmett Malloy’s “Big Easy Express” for Best Long Form Music Video.
On the movie, Mumford and Sons tour the US south-west from Oakland, California to New Orleans, Louisiana on a train with fellow indie folk artists Old Crow Medicine Show and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
I just reviewed the Blu-ray of “Big Easy Express” writing “Emmett Malloy’s movie “Big Easy Express” captures the fun and magic of Mumford and Sons on a train ride from Oakland to New Orleans.”
In his acceptance speech Director Malloy said “Thank you to the bands for letting us join a pretty remarkable trip that will be etched in my head forever. The country we live in, I’ve never seen so beautifully than on a train.”
“Big Easy Express” is available from iTunes, Amazon.com and Showtime.
Mumford and Sons Grammy performances
Mumford and Sons performed twice last night on the Grammy Awards, first with a rousing version of “I Will Wait.” Their spot brightened up what was becoming a slow night on the awards show. Taylor Swift’s opening number “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” was well staged and fun.
After that the night had been quiet, almost sleepy. Then Mumford and Sons burst on the stage with “I Will Wait.”

My wife commented when the hot performance ended “Now that was music!”
Mumford and Sons later appeared with Elton John singing “The Weight” as a tribute to Levon Helm of The Band who passed away in 2012. They were joined by T. Bone Burnett, Mavis Staples, and Zac Brown.

Somewhat confusingly, the 2012 Grammy Awards are handed out at the 2013 Grammys, simply because they are held during February 2013. Officially they are the 55th Grammy Awards.
