Tobii gaze technology lets you pick what you see on the screen at CES 2012
A Swedish company is showing technology that makes it possible to select screen items simply by looking at them.
For years I’ve wondered what would replace the 3 decade old mouse and keyboard input combination. Apple’s touch interface is just one of the options that will be available.
One of the problems of touch technology once you move off the tablet is reaching out to the screen which is tiresome.
Tobii is demonstrating a new gaze technology that integrates with Windows 8, due in the Fall of 2012.
Kinect is another way we may interact with the screen, although waving your arms in front of a computer will seem like too much exercise for most people.
The CES 2012 video is a quick demonstration. (Stay until 1:12 on the video where noise stops and she starts playing Asteroids with her eyes.)
Sensors in the monitor connect with your eye and follow where you are looking. This saves the effort of mousing or touch pad navigating around the screen.
Once you land on the item you want, click the mouse or touch pad.
Maybe they will add wink at the screen, who knows?
Kinect tracks both facial expressions and body movements and is said to be quicker than Tobii. Microsoft more than a year of successful experience with Kinect and is expected to ship Kinect compatible devices with Windows 8.
The developer expects commercial availability in two years.
