More swamp rock from a singer covered by Elvis Presley and Tom Jones
By Stephen Pate – Talking swamp rock and a reader, my cousin, suggested Tony Joe White from Louisiana.
Tony Joe White was a singer songwriter with a long career and a few big hits like Polk Salad Annie and Rainy Night in Georgia. Along with Elvis and Tom Jones, Tina Turner covered his song Steam Windows.
Swamp rock is that delicious brand of rock and roll born in the Cajun bayou’s of Louisiana where the Acadians were settled after the Brits did the ethnic cleansing of the Maritimes in 1755.
Many of the great early rock and roll artists came out of that mix of blues, Acadian and jazz that started in New Orleans. Later the sound got moved to Stax and Muscle Shoals studios.
Tony Joe White is still out there entertaining people with his music and smooth style.
He offers a free download on the Tony Joe White official website
His classic hits have been reissued on Best of Tony Joe White $5 from Amazon.com and Best of Polk Salad Annie in Canada.
Watching Rainy Night in Georgia recorded in 1992, you can see Tony Joe White still has the groove and feel. The guitar playing is perfect.
Tip of the hat to Cousin Ed for his suggestion.
