Bob Dylan Mono LPs and Witmark Demos ship tomorrow

Pre-orders from Amazon.com before October 19th get bonus concert CD

I can’t tell if I am really excited or not about Bob Dylan’s release tomorrow – The Witmark Demos: 1962-1964 (The Bootleg Series Vol. 9).

The Witmark Demos are the solo guitar and voice recordings Dylan did to allow his music publisher to notate the music and file copyrights.

I’ve heard some of them before and they are interesting versions of well-known songs. The CD is only $14 so it won’t empty my bank to get it.

The Original Mono Recordings of Bob Dylan’s first 8 LPs at $104 is a pricier decision.

They albums in the set are:

  1. Bob Dylan
  2. The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan
  3. The Time They Are A-Changin’
  4. Another Side Of Bob Dylan
  5. Bringing It All Back Home
  6. Highway 61 Revisited
  7. Blonde On Blonde
  8. John Wesley Harding

Those are fantastic albums full of great Dylan material. Even the first album Bob Dylan shouldn’t be missed. It has the version of House of the Rising Sun copied by the Animals. It also has Dylan’s first song with drums and backing electric guitar, Corrina Corrina. The arrangement is very jazzy and for folk music purists absolute heresy when it was released.

If don’t have those CD’s or albums already, go for it. I have both the CDs and the LPs and the difference between mono and stereo will be academic at best.

The bonus concert CD comes with either the Witmark demos or Mono LPs. In North America, the only place to get the bonus CD is Amazon.com.

In Canada, the Bonus CD comes with the higher priced SKU The Witmark Demos: 1962-1964 (The Bootleg Series Vol. 9) with Brandeis Concert at $23. (no longer available)Vinyl versions

Amazon.com have a vinyl bundle without the t-shirt and poster for about $207 US and $260 Can. If you check the SKU for The Witmark Demos: 1962-1964 (The Bootleg Series Vol. 9) (Vinyl) or The Original Mono Recordings (Vinyl) there should be a three-pack bundle for $208.

Sony has other offers of T-shirts, posters and vinyl LP versions that take you up to $350 for the greatest collection. With shipping the package can cost over $400.

I also ordered the Beatles Mono Set which was pure peer pressure. They sound so much like the stereo CDs I already that I am scratching my head.

I ordered both CD sets from the Amazon.com. How’s that for self control , eh?

Didn’t even think about the vinyl and t-shirts but I did order the Amazon.com vinyl bundle. OK so I can’t resist.

    Hi Stephen,

On behalf of Columbia Records and Special Rider many thanks for plugging “The Bootleg Series Volume 9 — The Witmark Demos” and “The Original Mono Recordings” on your site (street date 19th October) … .. thanks, also, on behalf of the artist and label for not posting any pirate links this material and, if you / your readers would like good quality, non-pirated previews from Dylan’s upcoming releases, then full-length versions of “The Times They Are A–Changin” and “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” shall shortly be available for fans and bloggers to host / post / share etc from http://www.bobdylan.com . Up-to-the-minute news on Dylan’s 2010 / 2011 shows and releases is, of course, also available on the official web-site and on http://www.myspace.com/bobdylan and an increasing archive of exclusive film footage of Bob Dylan performances is also available for fans and YouTubers via the official channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/BobDylanTV … .. and keep an eye on these official sources for details of further Dylan news, preview material and on-line promotions.

Also and as a goodwill gesture to fans and bloggers, an exclusive preview stream of a selection of tracks from “The Witmark Demos” is available via NPR as part of their ‘First Listen’ series at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=130356302 … .. this is for hyper-linking ONLY and for streaming by fans directly off NPR, so please reciprocate this goodwill gesture by NOT ripping or embedding these files.

I love these guys. They are like the Gestapo watching every story posted about Bob Dylan.

For the record – we are not plugging Bob Dylan, Sony Music or any record. We purchase our own music and comment on what we chose. We take no favors from sponsors.

Oh yes boys and girls, don’t stream any Bob Dylan music.

What is most offensive about Web Sherriff and Bob Dylan for hiring them is the heavy handed threats in all their communications. Don’t blame it on Sony. Dylan controls his own business within Sony Records. Dylan calls the shots.

Who would think that Mr. Freedom of the 1960s would hire Fascist police to keep the little boys and girls from sharing music. The irony is too much.

    Hi Again Stephen,

Thanks for your reply – although the Gestapo tag is tad on the strong side … .. we were simply thanking you for your review and highlighting the official preview tracks that fans and bloggers are welcome to share etc … .. and, surely, any artist is entitled to have some say over where and when their material is distributed on the net – particularly in the case of ‘new’ releases.

Food for thought – both ways we hope – and without too many servings of irony !!

    All The Best,

Your approach is heavy handed and threatening. Who needs it. Big turn off.

The NPR audio was taken down only a few days after the CDs were released.

Was it a pre-launch teaser or did someone figure out that people know how to capture a streaming audio?

Dylan giveth and Dylan taketh away. Blessed be the ways of our lord Dylan.

If you want them, you gotta serve somebody – the devil or the Lord.
