Cool video looks like it was done in someone’s bedroom and captures a special spirit
By Stephen Pate – It took curmudgeon Bob Lefsetz to introduce me to two phenomena at once – indie rock duo Pomplamoose and songwriter Allee Willis.
Pomplamoose were just breaking on the indie scene in 2010 with their quirky covers of songs like Beyonce’s “All The Single Ladies”.
Allee Willis has been an award winning songwriter in Los Angeles having written the theme song from the 5th most popular TV show of all time Friends, the score for the Broadway play A Color Purple, and the Pointer Sisters’ Neutron Dance among numerous other hit songs.
“Well, for now, we’ve got Allee Willis. And the resulting confection marries indie sensibility with pop craft and the result makes you smile, and isn’t that what music is all about? Watching this video makes you want to create yourself. Like so many in the business did in high school, tuned up their guitars and formed bands in the basement.”
“That’s the scene today. Not world domination, but high school. You remember high school, don’t you? When you cared not a whit about money, didn’t have a job and got deep into your passions, developed who you were? You loved the offbeat, you told your friends about your new finds, and you analyzed the lyrics endlessly.” Bob Lefsetz
Indie duo Pomplamoose is Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn. From a start in 2008, they have earned a significant following on YouTube with their quirky videos. They are the anti-thesis of polished, except they are very artful.
Allee Willis is a famous hit songwriter from Los Angeles who worked with Mark Cuban in 1992 to champion the internet as the new medium for music. She is awesomely talented and fun.
