David Carradine, age 72, was found dead in his hotel room in Bangkok, Thailand while filming a new movie. Reports say he hung himself in a wardrobe but officials have not confirmed the cause of death.

Carradine was famous for his Kung Fu movies and the notoriety that followed his role in Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill”.

Carradine became a cult star with his “B” Kung Fu movies. He also starred in numerous TV programs. Carradine had a self possessed demeanor that implied he had some inner wisdom, which tied back to the Kung Fu cult.

For a complete list of his performances see the IMDB database listing.

One of my favorite Carradine movies was his 1976 portrayal of Woody Guthrie, America’s classic folk and protest singer. Guthrie who wrote classics like This Land is Your Land was a complex artist, vagabond, socialist, union organizer, husband and lover. Carradine made Guthrie come alive on the screen with touching reality.

The movie is classic, the story as much the American dirty thirties as Grapes of Wrath. Guthrie’s music inspired generations of musicians like Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. The trailer is a little hokey but it gives you the idea. The movie is excellent and the Guthrie’s biography of the same name even better.
