Susan Boyle’s second place finish demonstrates how dumb those contests are

Susan Boyle placed 2nd on “Britain’s Got Talent”. She lost to another group called “Diversity”. Enjoy her singing. Forget about winner-take-all-contests.

Does that mean she is not talented? Or not a great singer? It means none of that which is why contests, award shows and other events that pit one person or team against the other are out of date.
We can enjoy more than one singer, more than one movie. We crave divesity and these moments in time where one person takes home the award are a counter-productive example of our culture’s worst traits: the winner syndrome.
The Olympics are a classic case of human stupidity. All those athletes competing so that one can take home a medal based on micro-second better performances.
Susan Boyle may or may not become a professional singer. But she certainly is talented.
