In 1968, The Band released Music from the Big Pink with Katie’s Been Gone written by Robbie Robertson and Richard Manuel. It was originally from the marvelous and wonky collection of songs recorded with Bob Dylan in the basement of that pink house in West Saugerties, NY in 1967. The Basement Tapes was not officially released until 1975 although it was widely bootlegged before hand.
Some places credit the song to Dylan although the best evidence is Robertson and Manuel wrote it. If you know more let me hear. Dylan did collaborate with Manuel in the haunting Tears of Rage. The Wikipedia entry is a good summary of the recordings.
It’s Manuel’s high voice on the song.
