Step right up - one day only - Ottawa Freak Show - snake girl and 307 MP's in wheelchairs

Only 22 days until the best freak show of the year in Canada, perhaps the world.

Snake girls from Hull will charm business men out of their wallets on Sparks Street. The sword swallower will swallow all the bullshit in Parliament. 307 of Canada’s MP’s will spend the day in a wheelchair, ostensibly to learn and feel the pain of Canada’s paraplegic’s. Since most MP’s are past 25, their chances of becoming paraplegics is about nil.

Canada’s paraplegic’s are putting on the funniest, freak show in history: Canada’s Parliament emasculated and rendered impotent in wheelchairs. They will have funny races in front of the Peace Tower where they go around in circles banging into each other.

It won’t last an hour. Our power broker MP’s will send their interns and assistants to endure the humiliation. they won’t be able to get in and out of the washrooms, bars and parliamentary dining room fast enough. Their SUV’s and limousines can take wheelchairs. They’ll beg off, prorogue the House of Commons, visit Thailand – anything but spend a day in a wheelchair.

The next day, the Parliament will pass a unanimous resolution to pat all disabled people on the head at the earliest opportunity, a show of patronizing sympathy. The Prime Minister’s Appointment Secretary will delete the email address of Danielle Leguard-White at dlwhite@canparaplegic.org.

Members of Parliament in Wheelchairs, Ottawa, Ontario, April 15th, 2009

On May 7th ten Members of Parliament will be participating in a truly unique opportunity to experience what it is like to have their entire day dictated by working in a wheelchair. This Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Awareness Day is the inspiration of the Canadian Paraplegic Association (CPA), an event wherein participating MP’s spend most of their work day in a wheelchair carrying on their daily business. The day will conclude with MP’s participating in a friendly wheelchair race in front of Parliament Hill’s Eternal Flame.

The Canadian Paraplegic Association will be promoting the month of May as Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month with various events taking place across the country.

The Canadian Paraplegic Association was founded in 1945 by veterans with disabilities returning from World War II. Today, the 48 CPA offices across Canada offer six core services and interact with over 40,000 individuals and their families. Historically, the highest incidence of spinal cord injury is in young men between the ages of 18-24; but in recent years there has been an increase in the rate of new injury to seniors.

Today alone there will be 3 new spinal cord injuries in Canada – approximately 1,000 new injuries a year.
