Baba’s in Charlottetown is the home of indie musicians.
When Drea MacDonald announced her Between You and Me her CD launch, fans turned out in droves last night.
Dan Currie led the evening on the mandolin in a country flavoured duo with Nick his brother on guitar.
Drea followed them with a short acoustic which is how I’ve always heard her. Drea was the host of Open Mic at Baba’s a few years ago and still is a regular and popular.
Drea has a great songwriting talent. Her songs stick in your brain, like Rain was on my mind even before I started editing the video. It was a natural for the first song to post. I love the feel of the song even more with Mears’ smooth guitar.
Where is the band? Dan Currie answered that with his kick-ass country, raunchy rock band that followed. I’d never seen Dan in a long set. He is an amazing guitarist, capable of getting lots of punch and dynamics from his axe.
Drea followed him on stage to end the evening with the excitement of the night. She was up for it: her band of Thomas Mears on lead guitar, Simon Joseph on bass, Mike MacDonald and Jon Mullins on lap steel. They settled into a groove right after the first set giving fans a taste of Drea backed by a solid group. We hardly noticed the night had passed and last call rang out.
I listened today and the CD has Drea with great backing, just what we wanted. Great for Drea to get a professional CD out. We love to hear her anytime.
The CD is sold at Back Alley disks. Drea produced it herself so most of the money goes to her unlike if she was on a label. Good for her:it’s the smart way to go these days.
If I get time, I’ll edit a few more videos and put them on YouTube.
