Charlottetown Agriculture Research Farm

Editor – here’s a date and time that will test the audience – Friday night in Charlottetown to talk politics – Wow, takes cajones!

By Phil Ferraro, Institute for Bioregional Studies Ltd., Charlottetown, PEI, UPDATED March 31, 2009

On Friday April 3, at 7:00 p.m., the Institute for Bioregional Studies will be holding a public meeting at 420 University Avenue, Farm Centre, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. This is an open door meeting; no secrets; no outside consultants; just an opportunity for neighbours and concerned citizens to get together and share ideas, concerns and visions of the future of the farm and the future of our provincial capital city.

According to media reports, the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI recently hosted a closed door, invitation only meeting, to discuss development of the Charlottetown Agriculture Research Farm. Some ideas leaking out include relocating the Fire Hall from its present downtown location and creating a military training centre

In the Saturday (March 28, 2009) Guardian the main headline was, ‘Report Coming on Home Farm.’ The story reports that a contracted consulting company, ‘02 Design and Planning’ will be back on April 7 with their recommendations for development of the ‘Experimental Farm.’

The story quotes Jeff Brant, CEO of the Mi’kmaq Development Corporation as saying that the 02 plan is a document that represents what ‘everybody’ wanted to see on the property.  The report goes on to state that Brant hopes to develop a consensus. We don’t understand how a consensus is gained behind closed doors and when neighbours of the farm are excluded from discussion.

If you cannot attend, we encourage you to call us, or reply by email prior to April 2. We will discuss the submitted ideas and strive to achieve a true consensus. Our goal is to present a sustainable community supported plan at the same time 02 makes its presentation on April 7.

It’s nice to see the Mi’kmaq asserting themselves these days and they should be included in provincial and federal discussions , after all they were the first citizens of this Island . For too many years, they were excluded from the main stream and made to keep to themselves. They have made great advancements in spite of all that and have done a lot towards shedding stereotypical attitudes used against them. Along with Acadiens, who have enjoyed a good relationship with the aboriginals, right from the earliest acadien settlers to the present day, they have educated themselves and distinguished themselves in a society that wasn’t too eager to accept them .
    bravo Mi’kmaq!
