Mayor Bloomberg of New York City handed out make-shift citations to the first responders in yesterday’s airplane crash, NY Mayor Honours Crash Heroes. (Sky News) While citing their bravery he promised to give them “fancy” citations later.
The captain of the plane, Chesley B “Sully” Sullenberger III, is being hailed as a hero for saving the lives of his passengers in what normally would have been a fatal disaster for everyone. Fox News reported “By all accounts, he’s a humble man. He will not want to brag about what he did. He is treating it as another day on the job.”
The pilot and crew, the coast guard, policemen, firemen, volunteers, paramedics, doctors, nurses and other first responders are part of a system that is easy to take for granted. Day after day, week after week they are on duty for us. They train, plan and then execute to save us from life’s accidents and potentially tragic events. Often risking their lives, they are usually self-effacing when thanked or praised. “It’s our job” they say.
We, as individuals and a society, owe them today and everyday our deep thanks for looking out for us.
Thank you.
