The Guardian editorial (‘Provincewide transit system can happen’ April 8, 2008) affirmed that Islandwide public transit will provide mobility to the many Islanders who either do not drive an automobile or do not possess one.
This will not only benefit those in need of transportation but will boost the Island economy by linking employment-seekers to employment opportunities; shoppers to shops; service consumers to service providers.
It will also lower health-care costs and, by lessening the need for families to have more than one car, put more money in pockets of many Islanders.
Basically, it is because of these long-established economic benefits that public transit is near universal, whether on small islands, villages or dominions.
