Province increases DSP support $100 per month across the board

The Province of Prince Edward Island has implemented a $100 per month across the board increase for all eligible Disability Support Program clients. Effective January 14, 2008, the increase allows all DSP clients to achieve more monthly support.

“It is a good first step in returning the $1 million taken by the government in the Budget of April 2006,” said Stephen Pate, director of PEI Disability Alert.

“The benefit levels had remained static since 2003 despite the upward effect of inflation on costs for those living with disabilities,” Pate added.

The PEI DSP provides support for persons living with disabilities including assistive devices like wheelchairs, walkers, hearing and vision aids, home care and personal care, educational and employment supports for 1,100 of PEI’s 22,000 persons living with disabilities.

“The new ceilings are effective as of Nov. 1st, 2007,” said Sharon Cameron Deputy Minister of Social Services and Seniors. She advised DSP clients to “present new disability needs to their caseworker upon annual review or by contacting their worker to discuss their individual case plans.”

“We are advising all DSP clients to call and have their plans revised upward to include the new $100,” said Pate.
