In last night’s CBC Compass debate, only NDP leader Dean Constable remembered that seniors with disabilities need the Disability Support Program. Other leaders talked about their idea of what the seniors needed like lower taxes, housing renovations and homecare.
Those are important. However, if you are a senior in need of a wheelchair and can’t afford it what do you do? You probably need a hearing aid, a scooter, a walker, or some other technical aid and assistive device. The same aid would be provided if you were 64 but not provided by the DSP if you are 65.
The political leaders danced around this like it’s a hot potato. No, gentleman it’s seniors living on less money than you or I in serious need of assistance.
Dean Constable answered strongly and clearly: it’s not right that seniors cannot get assistance under the DSP. Thank you Dean.
Now would the rest of the leaders get the message. If you’re disabled, the DSP is not optional, a frill, a goodie of an election platform – it’s a necessity of life.
