The government of Prince Edward Island is putting $7 million toward a new support program for people living with disabilities. It was announced during the provincial budget in March.
The program offers $1.5 million is new funding. The remainder will come from current provincial programs for disability support.
Health Minister Jamie Ballem says until now government only provided support for people who were receiving social assistance.
The new program will eliminate that requirement. “What we are proposing here is the food, clothing, shelter assessment done right now, that’s separate,” says Ballem. “We will look at the disability, whether the person is working, and we’ll see what supports they require.”
Ballem says the final details of the program will be available after government consults with interest groups across the province.
