When something you buy has a lifetime warranty, you want it replaced with a smile.

Last weekend, Long and McQuade did a FAIL on a $35 guitar cable replacement, trying to sub off a house brand for a brand name plus a sour look.

Canadian Tire got a PASS on replacing a $175 Schlage front door lock-set after 12 years of use, without batting an eyelash.  Continue reading

Yes Virginia there still are record stores

HMV is still around selling CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray although the service is worse than Amazon.com

Deadmau5 4×4=24

In my evening walk / wheelchair run last night I discovered the HMV store on Spring Garden Road in Halifax, NS.

Wow! There still are record stories outside of Wal-Mart, which is an abominable place to shop for music.

The upside is they had thousands of titles, many at $5 and $10. I got Deadmau5 ’4×4=12′ and Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland 25th Anniversary Edition’, both for $10. The Paul Simon CD/DVD was $14 on Amazon.com. I discovered later The downside is the service was really bad compared to shopping online. Continue reading

Cakewalk needs to start charging for premium support

The time for free support of mission critical DAW software is over

SONAR X1 Cakewalk needs to start charging for premium support photoPeople who use Sonar Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) in business are losing money when the product is buggy.

Cakewalk supports Sonar as if customers are not in the business of recording music.

Update – Sonar X1b now ready for prime time

I respectfully submit that Cakewalk needs to develop a tiered support level to keep it’s customers happy and to pay for the support businesses expect.

This is not a problem with Cakewalk’s employees: it’s a failure of management to put the proper customer service systems in place.

Forget how buggy Sonar X1 is. The support of the Online Forum and email support doesn’t cut it when time = money in business.   Continue reading

Parking lot shuffle is kiss of death in internet world

Warranty repairs are often shoddy and don’t fix the problem

Island Chevrolet, going out of business one customer at a time

Businesses who don’t respond fairly to their customers find themselves out of business in an age when customer complaints travel at the speed of light.

The customers walk away with their wallets to competitors and the rest is history.

Take car dealers for an example. Car dealers used to take warranty complaints with a grain of salt.

You’d leave the car and go to work.

When you pick the car up at night, it would be parked on the other side of the parking lot. A work order would be signed and keys returned.

On the way home, a sinking feeling would creep in that the problem hadn’t been fixed.

You got the parking lot shuffle.  Continue reading

Reasons why people leave Network Solutions

The technical support is on life support and non-responsive

Network Solutions Reasons why people leave Network Solutions photoAs reported in Hackers access Network Solutions mail accounts, the mail server at Network Solutions is set up to allow re-directs. Some hacker has figured that out. They are relaying emails using made up account names.

Faced with a customer request, most companies try to find a way to make it happen. At Network Solutions they want more forms filled out.

Network Solutions’ response to this obvious  “security alert – high risk” is to ask me to fill out forms. I don’t mind doing that except that’s how I reported the hack in the first place.

Being a ‘boy-scout’, I ventured back into their labyrinth system only to find their instructions impossible to execute.

Webtrix breaks Dell customer service log jam

webtrix 240x303 Webtrix breaks Dell customer service log jam photoIn customer service there is no substitute for some smarts

Webtrix dropped into my office the other day.

“I hear you can’t get Dell to jump on your network problem?”

She had read the story Dell’s customer service hits new all-time low. I wanted to wax eloquent about it but she cut me short.

“What color is the network cable?”

“That’s the same stupid question the Dell CSR asked me. What difference does that make?” I replied with another question.

“Just answer the question or I’m outta here.”  Continue reading
