Why Nokia may fail in North America

Fancy high-end phones will not hide the reality that Nokia’s customer service is substandard

Nokia Lumia 925 set to launch on May 16th will be dead in the water unless Nokia can fix service issues

Nokia is set to launch the Lumia 925 on May 16th with a lighter phone and better camera than the Lumia 920 but it’s a futile effort when the existing Lumia phones are trouble prone and service from Nokia slow to non-existent.

If Nokia had no competition, one could understand arrogance and bad service. Up against Apple and Android, it looks like Nokia has a death wish, or at least watched “The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight” once too often.

When your business-use phone is dead and gone back to Nokia for service, its hard to remember the screen is cool and it takes good pictures.  Continue reading

Is It Time To Dump Apple ?

The $239 billion loss in market value is a vote of no confidence in Apple’s future

Apple stock dropped from a high of $705 per share in September 2012 to $450 yesterday, a loss of $239 billion in market value in just 4 months.

Apple-aholics and shareholders hope this is an aberration but historically high-flying stocks generally have nowhere to go but down.

In the stock market, there are stars and dogs. Apple is now a dog, something I predicted in August 2012.

Apple’s first problem is they are selling old technology after leading the market in touch phones and tablets. Samsung Galaxy is the hot new brand.

Smartphones as information hub – Samsung ATIV S (photo S. Pate/NJN)

Mid-sized devices like 5″ and 7″ tablets are replacing the small format smartphone as the lines between device categories blurs.

Shawn DuBravac, chief economist at the Consumer Electronics Association, told reporters that making phone calls on smartphones is not their main purpose.

My wife and children could have told him that. They text, message, Tweet, Pin and Facebook but they don’t take calls on their iPhones, Android and Blackberry phones.

Companies like Microsoft with Windows 8 are also trying to blur the border between smartphones and computers so users become device independent.  Continue reading

In his Reddit AMA (ask me anything) Mark Cuban said he dropped the Apple iPhone for a Nokia Windows Phone.

“the windows phone kick the Iphone’s ass. Its not even close.”

He does not name the Lumia 920 but why would a billionaire buy anything but the best Nokia phone?  Continue reading

Samsung ATIV S Windows Phone 8

{rating}

The word is out. Windows Phone 8 is equal to or better than Apple’s iPhone family. Consumer Reports rated both systems about equal in their latest review.

With a completely new user interface that is fast, friendly and functional, Windows Phone 8 is ready to reset user expectations in the smartphone market.

The Samsung ATIV S is one of the top three Windows Phone 8 devices now available and it works like a charm. I’ve used it for a week and like almost everything about the phone.

It will be hard to go back to my iPhone.
