Grep hack of Network Solutions takes NJN Network and other sites offline

Google redirect from hacked sites

(Update – this story was lost and restored) Sunday our site, along with hundreds of other WordPress sites hosted by GoDaddy and Network Solutions was hacked by the “grep” virus. The hack re-directed users without virus protection on their computers to sites that attempted to infect them. Widespread hacks like this one prove the value of keeping your virus protection up to date.

At 5 AM Sunday the site was clean. At 8:30 AM, we found the hack and immediately took NJN Network offline. The site was cleaned by Sunday night. Google continued to give notice that the page was hacked until Monday afternoon until their experts had verified it. Continue reading →

Whew! we’re live again

Major virus attack on multiple Network Solutions / WordPress sites hits NJN Network hard

Whew!

Update Monday April 12th, 2001 -the only consolation after a weekend of hard work cleaning up our site is that Network Solutions had more than 100 WordPress sites hacked. Some say GoDaddy sites were hit with the same hack.

The developers from WordPress and Network Solutions engineers say they have tracked down the rogue and locked it out. We are working today to harden our site. What a crazy week that was! Back to the stories after more system admin.

So I’m working on stories Thursday morning, feeling like the top of the world.

Then SLAM BAM SCHZAMM down goes the website. I bring it back up but the dirty little coward is trying to infect my computer with a Greb virus.

Imagine infected by your own website!

I called Network Solutions and they pretended it was my fault. Yeah right I posted my passwords on Kijiji as a joke.

Two emails from friends and I knew I had to act so I took the whole shebang down, went private, put up the “Under Construction” sign.

Media taking cues from bloggers

TV networks and newspapers learn new tricks from bloggers but they won’t give bloggers credit

I get a chuckle out of mainstream media and their bleating “You’ve just a blogger. Baaa! Baaa! Baaa!”

Last night on CTV national news they were posting the LiveLeak shots of the newsroom fight. We put that up on VodPod Thursday night. In January the “big” networks started carrying the amateur Challenger video about 6 days after we posted it on LiveLeak. Myth of the professional journalist is dispelled again by Challenger video.

Bloggers like NJN Network broke the LiveLeaked Neda Agha Soltan story last year that won the George Polk Journalism Award for Videography.

Rupert Murdoch’s NY Post got caught stealing stories again from bloggers without attribution again. Baaaad newspapers.

The reality is we are all reporting the news – sad, shocking, funny, whimsical and entertaining. We need each other and use each others stories and bag of tricks. Bloggers just want to save a few trees.

IOC orders blogger to remove video Compass

The International Olympic Committee has ordered a P.E.I. blogger to remove a video of the death of a Georgian luger from his website.

CBC – Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21 of Georgia, died during a training run Feb. 12, just hours before the Olympic opening ceremonies. Stephen Pate, publisher of the online site NJN Network, published the video along with commentary about the death, and the IOC has since ordered him in an email to take it down.

The email states the IOC owns the rights to all images of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, and only licensed broadcasters can use them. Pate said he won’t remove the video, because Canada’s Copyright Act allows the use of copyrighted material as part of a news story.

IOC geht gegen kritischen Blogger vor

Das Olympische Komitee geht gegen Stephen Pate wegen einer Urheberrechtsverletzung vor. Er hatte das Video des Rodelunfalls der Olympischen Winterspiele veröffentlicht und kritische Fragen gestellt. Pietät als Deckmantel für finanzielle Interessen oder noch mehr?

DieJulia am Mittwoch gulli.com - Am Tag der Eröffnung der diesjährigen Olympischen Winterspiele in Vancouver ist der georgische Rodler Nodar Kumaritaschwili tödlich verunglückt als er beim Training mit 144km/h aus der Kurve getragen wurde und gegen einen Stahlträger prallte. Die offizielle Begründung des International Olympic Committee (IOC) lautete auf Fahrfehler.

Nachdem Stephen Pate, der hinter ‘Not Just News Network’ steht, unangenehme Fragen nach den Gründen für den Unfall stellte, wurde er durch das IOC aufgefordert, das Video des Unfalls unverzüglich von seiner Newsseite zu nehmen. Damit geht das Spektakel um die Löschaufforderungen des IOC in die nächste Runde. Die Begründung des IOC, dem Inhaber aller Bildrechte der Sportgroßveranstaltung, lautete, die Übertragungsrechte der Olympischen Spiele seien einigen wenigen Sendern, unter anderem ABC, exklusiv vorbehalten. Daher beginge er eine Copyright-Verletzung. Weiterhin sei die Verbreitung der Bilder den Angehörigen des Toten gegenüber respektlos. Vereinen sich hier Moral und Kapitalstreben? Sicherlich vor allem letzteres. Jedoch könnte es auch ein Interesse seitens des IOC geben, keine kritischen Fragen nach den Hintergründen des Unfalls publik werden zu lassen. The IOC claims “it owns all the rights to all images taken at the games, and only licensed broadcasters can use them.” The blogger’s argument is that “copyrighted images to be used in news worthy cases.”

The IOC won’t win on the internet in trying to retain ownership of news that has already happened. People upload the video. Then, they are removed. And they’re put back up the next day. And so on, and so on. You lose, IOC. [International Business Times]

The tragedy of the Olympic Winter Games is now turning into a symbol of greed. Unbelievably, the long arm of the International Olympic Committee has reached all the way to Prince Edward Island, of all places. The IOC has ordered Stephen Pate, a PEI blogger, to remove a clip of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvilli crashing during his fatal practice run.

The email sent to Pate says the IOC owns the rights to all images from the Vancouver Olympics; only licenced broadcasters can use them, according to CBC News. CBC reports that Pate argues he is allowed to post the images because Canada’s copyright act allows such material to be used in news stories.

IOC、リュージュ事故の動画を削除するようメディアサイトに要請

バンクーバーオリンピックのリュージュ競技練習中に起きた死亡事故の動画を掲載したサイトが、IOCから動画を削除するよう要請されているそうだ。（International Business Times、本家記事）。

バンクーバーオリンピック開幕日に行われたリュージュ競技の公開練習中、21歳のグルジア代表ノダル・クマリタシビリ選手がスピードを制御できずにコース外に投げ出され、鉄柱に強く身を打ちつけ死亡するという悲劇が起こった。カナダのメディアサイトNJNがこの件ついての記事を事故の動画とともに掲載したところ、IOC から動画削除を要請するメールが送られてきたという。

オリンピックに関する映像等の権利は全てIOCに属し、放映ライセンスを取得者にしか使用は許可されていない。しかし、NJN発行者である Stephen Pate曰く、カナダには著作権が他にあったとしても報道に値する場合においては使用を許可する法律があるとのことで、この件の報道を続ける姿勢だそうだ。

ちなみに冬季オリンピック86年の歴史で死亡事故が起きたのは今回の件を含めわずか5回だそうだ。

Der Standard.at – Das Internationale Olympische Komitee (IOC) hat eine sogenannte “Take Down Notice” – also eine Aufforderung zur Entfernung von Inhalten auf Webseiten – an den kanadischen Betreiber des Blogs NJN Network gestellt.

Es geht dabei um ein Video des tödlich verunglückten georgischen Rodlers Nodar Kumaritashvili. Das IOC beruft sich dabei auf seine Urheberrechte, der betroffene Blogger Stephen Pate ortet hingegen den Versuch kritische Berichte, die eine Aufklärung der Todesursache und Verantwortlichkeiten fordern, abzustellen.
