Finally Bob Dylan – The 30th Anniversary March 4 2014

We can pre-order the night Neil Young called “Bobfest”  Bob Dylan – The 30th Anniversary Concert on DVD and Blu-Ray

By Stephen Pate – Ironically one of the best Bob Dylan Concerts in history only has Dylan singing on 4 songs. For most of the October 16, 1992 night at Madison Square Gardens on New York City luminaries of rock and roll, folk, country and R&B played and sang Bob Dylan’s songs.

If you like Dylan’s material, you will enjoy this show. There was excitement in the air and the level of talent is amazing. It still gives me chills to watch it 20 years later.

Neil Young said “Thanks for inviting me to BobFest” between his two songs.

It was an awesome night and it’s finally available to everyone. The concert is available for pre-order from Amazon.com with the usual promise that they will protect your order for any price drop.

Speaking about the gig to Rolling Stone, guitarist GE Smith – who was the concert’s musical director – said: “There aren’t a lot of people that can attract a line-up like that, and everyone was on their best behaviour. Lou Reed and Neil Young can be prickly, but not in the three days we were prepping that show. I also got to talk to Johnny Cash. What’s cooler than that?” (NME)

Fitting since it was Dylan’s 30th Anniversary in the music business. Columbia invited along Dylan’s friends and other musicians including Neil Young, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, John Mellencamp, Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, Johnny Winter, Ron Wood, Eric Clapton, Booker T and the MG’s forming part of the house band.

I have the LaserDisc of this concert for since it was released in 1993 and have enjoyed playing it over and over.

It’s a phenomenal night, even watching Sinead O’Connor get booed off the stage for protesting the Pope at the concert of one of the greatest protest singers. That was rich.

There are pirated copies of the LaserDisc available from England but they won’t have much value when the real thing arrives.

It will be interesting to hear if they can improve the sound. LaserDisc’s have analog sound which is equal to CD quality.

With 1080P up-scaling on a modern home theatre received, the LaserDisc 420 picture looks very good.

I’m pre-ordering the Blu-Ray any way to have it.

The Deluxe Edition includes 40 minutes of extra material like behind the scenes, in the dressing rooms and the green room. Most of that material is already in circulation with the hard to find “Bob Dylan Highway Interactive CD”.

I’ll post this story and then go get the song and artist list in an update. (Link now live) Awesome!
