Review : Paul McCartney Kisses on the Bottom

Paul McCartney and Diana Krall in Capital Studio for Kisses on the Bottom sessions (image from iTunes)

Apple iTunes free streaming of studio sessions with Diana Krall and Joe Walsh won’t last much longer

Sir Paul McCartney’s new Kisses on the Bottom CD makes a happy and enjoyable addition to the recorded works of one of the world’s greatest song-smiths.  He sings some of the songs, mostly old, that influenced his musical tastes.

iTunes is streaming live the Capital Studios exclusive performance of Sir Paul McCartney’s new CD Kisses on the Bottom.

Prior to watching the 54 minute black and white video, the thought of Sir Paul singing old standards seemed less than appealing.

Not so, the CD is very well done with high points for choice, musicality and pure entertainment. Paul McCartney was always considered the soft Beatle and he does several nice ballads. He can swing as well with songs like Bye Bye Blackbird and It’s Only a Paper Moon.

The video and the CD are not the same performance. The video was a live performance at Capital Records studio in LA. Sir Paul pulls it off like a pro. The actual CD is a different set of performances.

Since Apple aren’t leaving the live stream available forever, take the time to stream the video before it goes off-line. Apple TV users can stream it on their set-top boxes.

The title Kisses on the Bottom title sounds risque. It comes from I’m Going To Sit Right Down And Write Myself a Letter “and make believe it came from you. Gonna write words oh so sweet. They’re gonna knock me offa my feet. A lot of kisses at the bottom. I’ll be glad I got’em.”

The CD has a light jazzy feel and pays homage to McCartney’s roots. His father was a jazz musician. Paul learned all the old tunes. He also learned to play jazz chords which made The Beatles songs different and difficult to learn.

Diana Krall adds jazzy piano. Her band including guest guitarist John Pizzarelli are up beat and on tempo. It makes a groovy combo since they swing together as a band. Stevie Wonder and Eric Clapton add a touch of guest class.

I loved the video. It was enjoyable to watch or to listen to in the background, about 6 times today. Black and white had the perfect retro feel.

Is McCartney going to replace Tony Bennett? No but it’s still a very good CD. McCartney’s voice is smokey and swings well.

NY Times said The music on Paul McCartney’s first “standards” album, “Kisses on the Bottom,” floats over you like a light mist on a cool spring morning in an English garden as the sun glints through the haze. You want to inhale the fresh air, taste the fragrance of buds blooming, as the sky clears to a serene deep blue. Mr. McCartney exudes the unassuming charm of a country gentleman in a good mood, sitting on the grass and whistling to himself.

Other critics were lukewarm or panned the CD as clichéd, done before but I like it if it’s anything close to the video.  I can’t give you a video – McCartney hates YouTube but you can stream the live Capital studio performance.
