By Stephen Pate – In March 2009 a relatively unknown English folk band called Mumford and Sons hit the stage in Austin Texas at the annual SXSW. When they return to SXSW in March 2012 they will be headliner act that conquered the world in 3 short years.

Mumford and Sons, Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall, and Ted Dwane, were only 15 months old when they bounced into Austin Texas for the annual music and film festival. There is no doubt they had the right stuff but like all bands they had to work their way up the ladder of recognition and success. For most bands that means 5 to 10 years of hard slogging.

A fan captured this performance of The Cave on some patio at SXSW 2009.

SXSW Festival

SXSW is a meeting of the brightest, newest and most intriguing music, film and interactive artists. Last year there were 2098 acts on 92 stages. More than 10,000 bands applied to be on those stages. SXSW is a must event for up-and-coming acts. This year’s show starts on March 9th.

Mumford and Sons will be part of the closing day festivities “on March 17…”on a train ride unlike any other with Emmett Malloy’s Big Easy Express, featuring Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show.”

Mumford and Sons 2010

After SXSW in March 2009, Mumford and Sons toured throughout the US and the UK establishing their fan base.

In March 2010, the band was so busy in touring Europe and the Middle East the couldn’t make SXSW. An early summer American tour landed the boys at Bonnaroo where they were on the big stage.

As 2010 ended, Mumford beat the odds and became one of the hottest stage acts on both sides of the Atlantic. They received two Grammy nominations in December, for Best New Artist and Best New Rock Song (Little Lion Man)

2011 Grammy Performance

While they didn’t win a Grammy in February 2011, Mumford and Sons broke out in both North American and UK markets when they played on stage with Bob Dylan and the Avett Brothers.

The story on NJN Network Mumford and Sons Win on Grammys has been the all-time most popular story on that site. It is usually the most viewed story every day.

After their Grammy appearance, the band’s CD shot up the charts. Tickets for their concerts were sold for 3 to 5 times face value.

Currently the band is splitting their time between touring and recording a new CD in the studio. All of that success happened in three years. It reminds me of Taylor Swift’s rise from a 16-year-old nobody to a Grammy winner, the youngest in history.
