New UPEI Dean of Arts old President rumors
Professor Richard Kurial is leaving and Dr. Joe Velaidum, Chair Religious Studies is the name candidate
The University of Prince Edward Island is all abuzz these days with rumors.
The top secret committee – so secret even it’s members don’t know each other – to select Wade MacLauchlan’s replacement as President is said to have picked Wade MacLauchlan. UPEI seems stuck in a rut.
MacLauchlan is rumored to be holding out for a British Lord title now that Conrad Black’s lordship is up for grabs. MacLauchlan is also rumored to be holding out for the cancellation of PEI’s Human Rights Act in secret contract negotiations. “First it was the cripples, now the geezers are after me,” some one report emanating from the President’s office.
No less spectacular are the rumours UPEI will appoint the first non-white Dean of Arts at UPEI. Kurial’s term is up and the front runner is Dr. Joe Velaidum, known to his friends as Vlad.

Chrome and Firefox may break Outlook
Installing Chrome or Firefox beta may cause hyperlinks in Outlook to stop working
After I installed the Google Chrome 6 browser, hyperlinks stopped working in Outlook 2010. You can only imagine how frustrating it is to not be able to click the links in email and have the browser find the page.
This is a known issue with Chrome. There are dozens of pages of help tips under the search “hyperlinks not working”.
The actual error messages are “General failure. The URL was “(insert URL)”. Application not found” or “Error launching browser” Continue reading
Little Red Rooster Howlin Wolf
Willie Dixon’s Chicago blues gets a triple workout
This is the original recording by Howlin Wolf ( Chester Arthur Burnett 1910 – 1976) with the Chess Records house band.
Little Red Rooster was one of many penned by Willie Dixon for the Chess artists. The song builds on early blues songs about a red rooster but it is more than that. Willie Dixon could reshape those songs into some new which he did.
Howlin Wolf had impeccable phrasing and emphasis, as well as being a star harp an slide slide guitar player. Backing him are Hubert Sumlin guitar, Johnny Jones piano, Willie Dixon bass, and Sam Lay drums. Other musicians cover this song but none get the same groove.
Jehovahs Witnesses make money calling for end of the world
Prophesying the End of Days can make you money but has a limited shelf life, Roger Ebert
Roger Ebert @ebertchicago, the esteemed movie critic of the Chicago Tribune and the famed Siskel and Ebert show, has discovered Twitter in a big way.
A prolific journalist, Ebert has become an even more prolific tweeter who seemingly suffers from insomnia as do I.
It’s not so much insomnia as a life long desire to watch late night movies like the Ninth Gate on television. Continue reading
Priceless UPEI the cost of human rights abuse
Celebrating two years of human rights abuse at UPEI
Two years ago, UPEI removed the last accessible parking from campus. From that date forward, approximately 70% of the disabled parking would be outside the legal limit of 50 meters from the building.
Pomplamoose watching their videos makes you want to create
Creative duo morphs from jazz to pop music in front of our eyes making music videos interesting again
Bob Lefsetz introduced me to Pomplamoose two days ago and I can’t get enough of them. Thankfully, they have dozens of videos posted on YouTube.
Pomplamoose are Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn from San Francisco. They started performing in 2008 and have a decent following on the internet. Their cover of Lady GaGa Telephone has more than 5 million hits.
Using what looks like a home recording setup they are creating some very interesting music, both originals and covers.
Their videos seem so effortless – and they show you almost everything – it makes you want to jump in and create your own music videos.

Allee Willis internet multi-media innovator
Pop hit writer of Neutron Dance and Boogie Wonderland continues to innovate
When Bob Lefsetz was extolling the virtues of Pomplamoose recently, he dissed their collaborator Allee Willis as “You know Allee, the eccentric who writes hit tunes. Does anybody need a hit tune anymore?”
Allee Willis more than eccentric. She is one of the original innovators of music on the internet and a very creative multi-discipline artist. Songwriter Bruce Roberts jumped to Allie’s defense. Lefsetz posted his comment as well.
“I read your Pomplamoose with Allee Willis piece and think that you’ve mischaracterized Willis’ role by just portraying her as an old-school pop songwriter who came into write with the Internet savvy Pomplamoose. Or worse yet “an eccentric who writes hit tunes” and you wonder what would happen if they brought Diane Warren in.”
“Willis was absolutely the first, no exaggeration here, THE FIRST, pop artist to preach the collapse of the record industry because of the impact of the Internet as early as 1991. She was the first to think about and experiment with music as a social and interactive art form.” Continue reading
Pomplamoose with Allee Willis – Jungle Animal
Cool video looks like it was done in someone’s bedroom and captures a special spirit
“Well, for now, we’ve got Allee Willis. And the resulting confection marries indie sensibility with pop craft and the result makes you smile, and isn’t that what music is all about? Watching this video makes you want to create yourself. Like so many in the business did in high school, tuned up their guitars and formed bands in the basement.”
“That’s the scene today. Not world domination, but high school. You remember high school, don’t you? When you cared not a whit about money, didn’t have a job and got deep into your passions, developed who you were? You loved the offbeat, you told your friends about your new finds, and you analyzed the lyrics endlessly.” Bob Lefsetz Video follows the break
