Samsung Android marketing war exploits anti-Apple sentiment

Customers benefit from choice, price discounts and widespread availability

Amazon.com discounts Samsung Captivate to $0.01

Buy a new Samsung Captivate Android Phone (AT&T) with a new AT&T service plan and the phone is just one cent.

Get the T Mobile version Samsung Vibrant Android Phone (T-Mobile) of the phone for $50.

The same discounting strategy worked for T Mobile when it offered two HTC Android phones for the price of one. Double up – buy one get one free

Android phones are everywhere and Samsung is working hard with deals, product variety, retail display space, internet marketing, and the whole array of Facebook Twitter presence. It’s working: they have shipped 1 million phones since releasing the Android Galaxy series of smart phones a month ago.

‘”No question there is an anti-Apple, pro-Android movement afoot,” said Jack Gold, principal analyst at J.Gold Associates. “It’s not just about price. It’s also about having an open alternative with much less dictatorial control of what the user can do with the device.” Gold said he expects that sales of Android devices from all manufacturers will surpass Apple iPhone sales by 2011. Gartner analysts have said the same thing.’ ComputerWorld

The closed shop at Apple puts people off. They get blocked from doing what they want. While tens millions of people agree with Apple, a closed strategy has never won the marketing battle to dominate.  Continue reading

Galaxy S Vibrant

Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant from Bell Mobility

Canada stopped being an Android Wasteland from this date forward. Bell Mobility is shipping the highly prized Samsung S Vibrant at the low price of $149 on a 3 year contract.

Try this on for size – SUPER AMOLED touchscreen. 4” with vivid colors in an ultra-thin display. 720p HD video camera plus 5 Mb camera for capturing everything that happens around you.

The shots I got of the flooding streets in Charlottetown were on a Blackberry. Nice but not HD. The Samsung Galaxy S is just under the amazing quality you get on a Flip UltraHD. Of course, the Flip gives you 2 hours of video but most moments worth capturing are only a few minutes long.   Continue reading

Are You Too Old to Make It?

Most musicians find as they get older they didn’t achieve fame and fortune

Dave Harris (image: Rennett Stowe on Flickr)

By Scott James, Echoes – Most musicians I know hold a dream to someday ‘make it’ in the music business. To play in front of huge crowds and live a lifestyle that they can only imagine. Many of us believe that we’ll someday get there. Unfortunately most of us find ourselves growing older with an ever increasing fear that we’re missing the boat.

We’re conditioned to believe that if we’re going to make it then we have to do it at a young age. I had already started to have this feeling when I was in my early 20′s. I felt like I was slacking because I hadn’t ‘made it’ yet.

So how old is too old? Well, I think what we need to look at is the fundamental equation the whole business boils down to. It’s a value exchange between the audience and the artist. The audience pays money for the value they get from the artist. So ask yourself: how old would a performer have to be before you stopped receiving value from them? Would you not pay for a great artist who was 65 years old? I would. One of the best performances I’ve ever seen was a rock and roll band of men who were all in their 80′s!  Continue reading

Daniel Lanois Soul Mining

New autobiography by Canadian producer performer arrives November 9, 2010

Canadian Daniel Lanois is publishing his memoirs this fall. Despite the June motorcycle accident that almost killed him, Lanois continues to produce material for public consumption.

Lanois is best known for producing U2 since The Joshua Tree and two award winning albums for Bob Dylan, Oh Mercy and Time Out of Mind

Along with producing other musicians, Lanois has had a long career of personal performance and a loyal, if somewhat smaller than U2, fan base. His CDs have a mystical quality that fans cherish. His performances are simply awesome as he displays great control over the music and layering of his sound.

Lanois top CDs are Shine which presents a mellow, gentle side and the earlier Acadie with its exploration of his French Canadian roots. Acadie contains the popular Jolie Louise and Under A Stormy Sky.
