Hawaii spared the hit of major tsunami

8.8 Richter Chilean earthquake generates 1 meter wave on Hawaii

The warnings had been out since dawn. The beaches closed to bathers, coastal roads cleared, the warning sirens blared.

In the end, the Tsunami was less than the 2 meter wave expected. A wave of 1 meter at the top and one meter at the trough gently rolled into Hilo beach.

The wave was so gentle, it took reporters some time to determine that it actually was the tsunami.

The third wave in the video covers an inshore reef in about five minutes.

Tsunami Alert – beaches and shoreline in Hawaii waits

First estimate of 11:05 AM arrival at Hilo has come and passed

Hawaii waits for tsunami

At 11:20 local time, there is little indication of a Tsunami in Hawaii. Local reporters sight some water receding at the shore.

There is no way to know if there will be damage. People are being urged to be alert and watch and stay on higher ground.

The beaches and water are deserted as Hawaiians wait.

Scientists have just told the media that it may take another 30-60 minutes for the tsunami to arrive.

Massive quake, aftershocks hit Chile; at least 147 dead

Santiago, Chile (CNN) — A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake rocked Chile early Saturday, killing at least 147 people and triggering tsunami warnings for the entire Pacific basin.

CNN - Warning sirens were sounded in Hawaii at 6 a.m. (11 a.m. ET), although any possible tsunami would not strike for several hours. Tsunamis can travel at 400 to 500 mph — the speed of a jet plane, said Georgia Tech geology professor Kurt Frankel.  Continue reading

Shake Map - Chile Feb 27 2010 earthquake

USGS – Huge 8.8-magnitude quake hits Chile

This earthquake occurred at the boundary between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. The two plates are converging at a rate of 80 mm per year. The earthquake occurred as thrust-faulting on the interface between the two plates, with the Nazca plate moving down and landward below the South American plate.

Coastal Chile has a history of very large earthquakes. Since 1973, there have been 13 events of magnitude 7.0 or greater.

The February 27 shock originated about 230 km north of the source region of the magnitude 9.5 earthquake of May, 1960 – the largest earthquake worldwide in the last 200 years or more.

This giant earthquake spawned a tsunami that engulfed the Pacific Ocean. An estimated 1600 lives were lost to the 1960 earthquake and tsunami in Chile, and the 1960 tsunami took another 200 lives among Japan, Hawaii, and the Philippines. Approximately 870 km to the north of the February 27 earthquake is the source region of the magnitude 8.5 earthquake of November, 1922. This great quake significantly impacted central Chile, killing several hundred people and causing severe property damage.

The 1922 quake generated a 9-meter local tsunami that inundated the Chile coast near the town of Coquimbo; the tsunami also crossed the Pacific, washing away boats in Hilo harbor, Hawaii.

The magnitude 8.8 earthquake of February 27, 2010 ruptured the portion of the South American subduction zone separating these two massive historical earthquakes.

Rename IOC the Old Farts Club

So what if the woman’s hockey team celebrate on the ice

Girls celebrate in style CHRIS O'MEARA / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The IOC looks like the Old Farts Club picking on the woman’s hockey team from Canada.

They had just won the Gold.

The public was gone and the girls are having beer, cigars and a laugh on the ice.

The male hockey players are usually up to worse shenanigans than that.

I imagine the IOC don’t really know what hockey is. They were even talking about canceling woman’s hockey.

The Winnipeg Free Press reports they won’t press charges.  IOC plans a letter but no investigation into Canadian women’s hockey celebration

Old farts.   Party on Canada!

IOC orders blogger to remove video Compass

The International Olympic Committee has ordered a P.E.I. blogger to remove a video of the death of a Georgian luger from his website.

Stephen Pate on CBC Compass

CBC – Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21 of Georgia, died during a training run Feb. 12, just hours before the Olympic opening ceremonies. Stephen Pate, publisher of the online site NJN Network, published the video along with commentary about the death, and the IOC has since ordered him in an email to take it down.

The email states the IOC owns the rights to all images of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, and only licensed broadcasters can use them. Pate said he won’t remove the video, because Canada’s Copyright Act allows the use of copyrighted material as part of a news story.

Google Street View gets EU warning

Sober second thought says Street View can be privacy disaster

EU privacy concerns have Google on the defensive over Street View. The new feature of Google Maps provides street level views of people, houses and buildings with photographs linked to Google Maps.

The EU wants people warned when Google is in town taking photographs, faces and license plates blurred, and the photographs destroyed in 6 months.

In Germany, house numbers are blurred and people can have their houses opted out.

A local realtor thought the service would be helpful to people planning to move to an area. Did he consider the photographs are dated and may not show the property at its best? What if it was garbage day or the yard needed landscaping. Warts and all real estate selling doesn’t sound like a value enhancing proposition.

Another Iranian young man dies in prison

Mostafa Mir Ebrahimi, 23, dies in prison after 6 months with no explanation

Mostafa Mir Ebrahimi 23

The tragedies in Iran keep mounting.

Mostafa Mir Ebrahimi was 22 years old when he went to visit the grave of Neda Agha-Soltan, the young woman shot in the streets of Tehran.

He was arrested and taken to a secret location. His friends told his family who searched for him without success.

He was not charged with a crime nor did he stand trial. His name didn’t show up on the long list of detainees.

Somehow, he died in prison without explanation.

His father was informed of his death but told the body would not be given back to the family. The government apparently has buried the body and will tell the family the grave site later. From Persian2English
