Auditor General needs to reveal what he knows
The hollow ring of insincerity
Charlottetown Guardian Editor:
Last Thursday’s public accounts committee concluded with the same result we have been getting all along with the exception of the auditor general’s revelations that after January 2008 the four-unit limit was lifted and some companies received eight units while others obtained 12.
These were obviously companies that came to his attention during the audit of the small sampling he examined. It is widely held that some companies have received far in excess of 12 units, so for the auditor to say that a further probe would not change his recommendation rings hollow.
How could he possibly know that a further sampling would not change his recommendations? Does his response mean that he knows there are businesses that received a greater number of units but he did not examine the files or does it mean he did examine the files and is not permitted to reveal the results of his investigation?
As for the MLAs on the public accounts committee, it is very simple, ladies and gentlemen. You were elected by the citizens of the province to provide good government and accountability. You haven’t been doing that.
