Hackers left code and stole credit cards from 4,343 eCommerce sites.

Story from ComputerWorld

In a letter sent to merchants who use its Ecommerce Hosting services, the company said that someone illegally installed software on company servers used handle credit card transactions initiated by 573,928 people between March 12 and June 8, 2009. ComputerWorld

Criminals are believed to have left a Trojan on servers at Network Solutions, one of the largest web registration services, and stolen credit card information from more 4,000 of 10,000 merchant sites hosted by them.

While no reports of misuse of credit cards has surfaced since the hack was spotted on July 13, 2009, no one can be sure of the impact.

Network Solutions has stopped the breach and hired TransUnion to provide up to one year of credit card monitoring services to clients.

“We have arranged for a leading credit reporting agency to work with us, on behalf of our merchants, to contact our merchants’ customers whose data may have been affected and provide services that will help potentially affected U.S.-based customers protect their information. These services are being provided free of charge to our merchants and their U.S.-based customers. We are in the process of notifying both our merchants and their customers about this matter, and we are encouraging our merchants to visit a website we have established for them at www.careandprotect.com.”

“Our customers’ ability to rely on the safety of our solutions is our highest priority. We are deeply sorry for any concern or inconvenience this may cause our merchants or their customers.” Network Solutions

US Customers affected will be notified by TransUnion if they are affected. We are checking for the impact on Canadian and other non-US customers.

Network Solutions also provides services in web name registration and non-commerce site hosting. Those services are reported to be unaffected by the hack.

NJN Network is hosted on Network Solutions servers; however, we do not collect or store credit card information and there is no impact on our account.
