The real Hockey Night in Canada theme

There is something to be said for too much education. It makes a fool of people. Like the Hockey Night in Canada theme. First the CBC loses the song we remember – market 101 big mistake. Second they don’t beg Stompin Tom to use his song. Lest you think me a cretin, my favourite composers are Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, Bob Dylan and Stompin Tom. Too much education makes you stupid. Pride keeps you there. Go Stompin Tom.

Wind energy plan will affect many

The Journal Pioneer
Editor,

I attended the recent monthly meeting of the Summerside City Council to support the opposition to the site selection of the proposed wind farm development in St. Eleanor’s.

I would like to inform those who live in these neighbourhoods you are going to be directly effected by this development.

Residents of North Drive and Decker Road will have 400-plus ft. wind turbine in their back yard. Residents of Gavin Estates may not yet have a turbine in our backyard, but we will hear and see the flicker from two of the four that are proposed – it will be louder than the noise from the highway.

Women with a disability are more likely to suffer abuse by their spouse or partner, according to new research.

Dr Brian Armour, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, found that 37.3 per cent of women with a disability reported violent abuse in their lifetime, compared to 20.6 per cent of women without a disability. Continue reading

Disability Discrimination in Workplace and its Justification

Editor: some of the statements reflect the law in Great Britian and are not identical in Canada or the United States.

PEI is governed by the Human Rights Act and by common law.

Generally employers are called on to accomodate workplace disability; however, there are many reported cases where employers have dismissed people based on disability. Such action by the employer may be a cause for action as a wrongful dismissal or to the Human Rights Commission, both of which can be long and expensive to pursue.

Check your local statutes and consult a lawyer in your specific case.

Microsoft Sphere, too cool

My life has been too intense lately, all this social advocacy broken up with music gigs. Did you know that every time you think about politicians 1 million brains cells cry out for relief.

I need to stay inside and explore new technology like Microsoft Sphere and Surface.

Way cool! I want them! Now.

This could be the breakout for dull and boring computers, which are essentially the same as they were 10 years ago, boxes with software.

Oh those markets, those crazy markets

By Stephen Pate

I love pundits
they prognosticate portentously
and ponderously
when only the Fates know.

The market is driven upward
because it must,
but every upward has a bust,
a down,
shareholders frown
but next time they’ll all come around
because greed and fear are always in play…
those markets will have another day
and we will survive,
stay alive, and even thrive…
or we won’t.

I have more rhymes
But not this time.

Note – the cheap Victoria Secrets ad was removed because everyone thought I was nuts. Seemed like a good idea at 2 AM.

Oh UPEI we stand on guard for thee, the adventures of Chucky the Beaver

Oh yeah Canada. Would Chucky the beaver be allowed to attend UPEI? Not with crutches.

The other day I was eavesdropping outside the Registrar’s office, hiding behind a plant. It was a big plant and I’m a small beaver when squatting down. I was trying to learn what motivates the Board of Governors. I was also contemplating chewing the stem of the palm tree in front of me.

Inside the Governors were having a meeting.

I couldn’t hear much until they started singing. Was that O Canada? The tune sounded like it.

I rose patriotically to my feet, er flipper tail, from behind the palm tree, thus revealing my secret service position. The secretary stared nervously.

Disabled people must be a priority

October 21, 2008
The Journal Pioneer
Editor,

I am writing in regard to Stephen Pate’s letter, “Return disable parking to UPEI” about UPEI taking out the disabled parking spaces to make them into parking places for truckers.

I agree with Stephen’s letter that they should put them back in.

The disabled people are much more important than the truckers. The disabled shouldn’t have so far to go to get where they need to be.

I write this in hope that they put the disabled parking places back where they once were.

HALIFAX, N.S. – The Nova Scotia government is allowing immigrants who came to the province under a tainted business mentorship program to apply for refunds.

The program – which has been sent to the RCMP for review by the province’s auditor general – attracted more than 800 immigrants who paid fees of about $130,000 in return for middle-management job placements.

Lanois in Halifax has great vibe, video at 7

Daniel Lanois played on Saturday night October 12th in Halifax and the crowd went wild. Lanois the famous producer behind U2, Dylan and other musical luminaries likes to tour with a smallish band – 4 piece in Halifax – doing his own material.

The capacity crown at the Marquis Club on Gottingen Street in Halifax got their money’s worth and more as Lanois rocked out the night.

After driving versions of songs like The Messenger, Lanois held the crowd in his hand as he sang part of his set solo. He repeated a solo at the end in the uninterrupted 2.5 hour performance.
