Priorities need to be reassessed

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Editor,

I was dismayed to read the government spent $200,000 for a cocktail party and flew the Tourism Minister to Ottawa to attend it (Journal Pioneer May 9/08: “Tourism minister attacked for party to kick off air flight”).

In April, we learned the government had given $8 million to two of the richest families on P.E.I., the Schurmans and the Irvings. Apparently they are high on the list of families in need on P.E.I.

This flagrant misspending of public money flies in the face of a $35,000 cutback in purchasing wheelchairs, hearing aids and special equipment for the disabled.

“Did the government spend any time looking in its bank account to help the poor with their heating bills or to provide an alternative to oil?”

Did the government spend any time looking in its bank account to help the poor with their heating bills or to provide an alternative to oil? Did the government find a way to put a few more dollars in the budget for wheelchairs and other things the disabled need? No.

The government has time for the rich and powerful, to hand out public money but not for families who need help. Is the government out of touch with real people in need?
