Only 55% of Rick Hansen Fundraising Stays Local

Subsequent to our post on Rick Hanson Wheels in Motion, we received the following from Myrtle Jenkins-Smith of the CPA-PEI. 45% for overheads seems inappropriately high. The usual amount is no more than 20% to the national organization. Original post August 4, 2008 Updated April 6, 2009

Hi Stephen,

Every community which hosts a Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event follows a standard funding formula which sees 55% of the gross revenue returned to the local community from which it is raise for quality-of-life projects which positively impact individuals with spinal cord injuries, and the communities in which they live. 25% of the funds are directed towards spinal cord injury research. Specifically this year the research funds are directed towards matching persons with spinal cord injuries with current translational research opportunities. The remaining 20% goes to sustain the Wheels in Motion Program.

A tripartite agreement was reached between the Government of Prince Edward Island, CPA- PEI, and the Rick Hansen Foundation to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the completion of Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion World Tour. The Government of Prince Edward Island has provided the Rick Hansen Foundation with a $40,000 annual contribution for the next 5 years, which is then administered in a collaborative fashion with CPA- PEI to advance persons with spinal cord injuries in PEI. 100% of the funds ultimately flow back to PEI spinal cord injury stakeholders.

Should you have any further questions with the Rick Hansen events please feel free to contact Kevin Murphy at the Rick Hansen Foundation at kmurphy@rickhansen.com. and he would be happy to assist you.

Thanks!
Myrtle Jenkins-Smith
Coordinator CPA-PEI
